Productivity Increase for HSC-Milling Spindles

Regenerative chatter limits the productivity of high-speed cutting processes, especially with the milling of aluminium components for the aircraft industry. Productivity is defined by MRR (Material Removal Rate) in liters swarfs per minute.

Chatter is caused by system and process instabilities, which can be avoided by means of applying specific damping. Since passive damping methods proved to be insufficient Wölfel in co-operation with an industrial partner, namely WEISS Spindeltechnologie GmbH, has developed a HSC milling spindle with active damping through piezo-actuators.

The results of this technology implemented by Wölfel for the first time are convincing: An increase of 50 % of the MRR - and consequently of productivity - was proven in the milling test.
