Wölfel has been involved in Strategic Noise Mapping and Action Planning since the very beginnings of European Commission Directive 2002/49/EC by sending an expert to Working Group 4 "Noise Mapping" from 1998-2002, i.e. in the critical preparatory phase of the Directive. Wölfel was the only noise mapping software manufacturer invited to join any of the working groups.

After the Directive was published, Wölfel took the lead of the project Adaptation and Revision of Interim Computation methods (AR-INTERIM-CM). The project produced the technical evidence that was published by European Commission as Recommendation 2003/613/EC.

Next, Wölfel was project leader of the two initial DEFRA projects that produced the evidence published in the first release of the Good Practice on Strategic Noise Mapping.

The experience of Wölfel in both noise mapping and action planning is much older than the European Commission Directive. In fact, in Germany Wölfel is active in this field since the 80ies of the past century.
