Imbalance detection for rotors of wind turbines

In the frame of the „Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM)“ the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the project management agency EuroNorm supports the R&D project IBD.Blade.

This project comprises design and development of a system for the detection and discrimination of aerodynamic and mass imbalances of rotors of wind turbines. Using sensors in the nacelle and hub the system measures vibrations of the turbine which are excited by imbalance forces. During this project algorithms for analysis and interpretation of the measured vibration will be developed. By this approach for the first time a system for detection and discrimination of aerodynamic and mass imbalance of rotors during operation (online) will be developed. By timely waring this enables turbine operators to initiate measures for minimizing structural loads which results in an increase of lifetime and efficiency of the plants providing an economic advantage.

The aim as well as the combination and development of the sensor system, interfaces, synchronization of the data collection and methods are new approaches.  Within the project these new approaches will be designed and constructed as demonstrators. Subsequently the results will be tested in field experiments with regard to their functionality and capability.
