Ice detection system for rotor blades of wind turbines

Abstract

In the frame of the „Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM)“ the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the project management agency EuroNorm supported the R&D project IDS Blade.
This project comprised design and development of a system for the detection of ice on rotor blades of wind turbines which measures small changes of the eigenvalues of the system (vibrations, modal parameters, damping, acoustics) using several sensors. The data is processed with ice-detection algorithms developed in the project. In comparison with competitors a more reliable and faster detection of ice as well as no-ice on rotor blades was achieved which provides operators of wind turbines with an economic advantage by minimization of down times and maintenance effort.

The aim and the development of the sensors, interfaces and hardware were new approaches. The basic methods of the project “SHM wind” were transferred and enhanced in the direction of ice detection. Within the project these new approaches were designed and constructed as demonstrators. Subsequently the results were tested in field experiments with regard to their functionality and capability.
