Eddy current damper for pipes

In the frame of the „Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM)“ the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the project management agency EuroNorm supported the R&D project WiTiRohr.
This project comprises design and development of vibration dampers using eddy current damping for the reduction of pipe vibrations. For this the advantages of the eddy current damping principle (independence of temperature, no abutment needed) was used to create unique features and to cover extended application possibilities for which currently available damping technologies like viscous dampers are not suitable. In order to guarantee a broad application range the tunability of the vibration damper should cover a broad frequency range (3 Hz – 25 Hz). Also various damper masses were planned (50 kg – 500 kg). To carry the static load of the damper an optional gravitation abutment should be capable of being integrated. Within the project these new approaches were designed and constructed as demonstrators. Subsequently the efficacy of the damper was shown by test measurements in a laboratory setup.
