Regenerative chatter limits the productivity of high-speed cutting processes, especially in case of milling of aluminium components for the aircraft industry. Productivity is defined by MRR (Material Removal Rate) in liters of chips per minute.
Chatter is caused by system and process instabilities, which can be avoided by applying specific damping. As passive damping methods have proved to be insufficient, Wölfel has developed a HSC milling spindle with active damping through piezo-actuators, in cooperation with an industrial partner, namely WEISS Spindeltechnologie GmbH.
The results of this technology realized by Wölfel for the first time are convincing: An increase of 50 % of the MRR - and thus of the productivity - was proven in the milling test.
