Infrastructure monitoring using special machines – Evaluating rail condition during operation
Special machines are specialized rail vehicles that are used for construction, maintenance, and repair tasks on the rail network. These include rail grinding vehicles, track work vehicles, and rail transport vehicles with special work equipment such as grinding technology, lifting and assembly equipment, or transport modules.
These vehicles regularly travel on the rail network as part of their work and move precisely in the sections that are particularly relevant to the condition of the infrastructure. This makes special machines suitable as mobile platforms for continuously recording information on the condition of the rails – without additional measurement runs or separate inspection cycles.
In particular, vibration- and acoustic-based anomalies such as roughness, slip waves, or other irregularities caused by running conditions can be recorded in this way on a section-by-section basis and processed for consistent presentation. This provides additional condition information that supplements the assessment of rail condition during operation.
