Wheelset monitoring – Detect wheel wear and damage at an early stage, make maintenance predictable

Wheelsets are among the most cost- and safety-critical components of rail vehicles. Running surface defects such as flat spots, out-of-roundness, or polygonization develop gradually during operation and lead to increased vibrations, noise emissions, and additional mechanical stress.

Damage to the wheel system causes follow-up costs along the entire value chain – from additional maintenance costs to restrictions in reliability and punctuality. Since wear developments are not continuously recorded between inspections, there is a risk of unplanned damage events that ultimately lead to failures.

At the same time, the periodic overhaul that is common today means that wheelsets are often replaced before they reach their wear limit.
