To ensure that “everything holds up” under full operational loads or in the event of an emergency (e.g. earthquake or airplane crash), industrial and nuclear facilities must meet high standards. These standards are defined in numerous norms and regulations; the requirements for design, assessment, testing and documentation are precisely specified.

To name just a few: The standards DIN EN 1998 (Eurocode 8, EC8), ASCE 7, IEEE 693, KTA 2201.3 and KTA 2201.4 deal with the design of structures and components for the earthquake load case. Beyond that, there are regulations that define the requirements for specific components; in Germany, for example, AD2000, DIN EN 13480-3, DIN EN 13445-3 and VDI 3842 are to be mentioned for pipelines, vessels and other pressure equipment. In the context of vibrations of machines, for instance, the standard series of DIN ISO 10816 or DIN ISO 20816 are regularly applied.
